Dan Sultan

Fat Controller

15/09/17

Tanya Mackay & William Edmonds

An eager crowd waited for the charismatic presence of Australian singer songwriter Dan Sultan to take the stage at the Fat Controller. After having to postpone his show almost ten months ago, Sultan was quick to capture the crowd with his friendly banter and cheeky smile. The buzz of anticipation filled the room before the crowd roared into an excited cheer as Sultan began the show with the attention grabbing cords of ‘Magnetic’. The room quickly heated up, as he unleashed the first electrifying guitar solo, leaving the crowd thirsty for more.

Touring his new Album ‘Killer’, it was apparent that the new record is another collection of not only catchy high-energy songs but deep, bluesy tunes that showcase both Sultan’s undeniably smooth vocals and immensely talented band.  Keeping the crowd engaged Sultan mused of people trying to label him and his eclectic style, rock and roll, blues and sometimes-even soul. He jokingly crooned, don’t label my music or me and then broke into another upbeat and lively song, proving that his style can’t be labeled as anything other than enjoyable.

Sultan whimsically stated to the crowd he’d come down with a chest infection, which no one would have guessed from his fantastic vocal performance. He laughed off being on a Chinese cough syrup and unable to operate heavy machinery or drive, yet he kept the riffs coming hard and heavy, licking out another spellbinding solo effortlessly. The signature song rom the new album, ‘Killer’ captured the audience demonstrating Sultan’s endless capacity to reinvent himself as both a performer and songwriter.

Edging towards the end of his set the band ripped into the floor filling song ‘Reaction’, and Sultan certainly did get a reaction from the crowd with this one. The deep cords, and captivating yet soulful lyrics had the room swaying like a metronome as they sung along. Energy high, Sultan pulled out ‘Kingdom’ for his final number, a politically fueled edgy track that filled the room with a intense haunting energy, As Dan left the stage the room quickly and enthusiastically called for an encore, and Dan delivered. Reappearing to belt out the crowd favorite, ‘Old Fitzroy’.

Highlighting the depth and talent of Dan Sultan and his band, this was a fantastic show. The crowd was clearly entertained throughout the entire set with Dan keeping the liveliness up with his performance, stage presence and undeniably mesmerising songs from his new album.
