Snatched Review – Samuel Sunter

Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn team up in ‘Snatched’ to deliver a somewhat humorous but ultimately disappointing film. The mother daughter comedy follows Schumer and Hawn reconnecting their relationship on an adventurous holiday in Ecuador that goes horribly wrong.  Kidnapped and on the run, the two stars comically attempt to find safety in the foreign country facing farcical obstacles along the way. The film certainly had its funny moments, however I felt that it didn’t meet its full comic potential and wasted the talent of Schumer and Hawn.

A large issue of the film is its inconsistency and incoherence. At times, the segue between certain scenes felt disjointed and clunky. To add to this, I found Schumer’s character as the naïve and whimsical woman hard to relate to because it was too stereotyped and unrealistic. Schumer’s dialogue in the film changed emotion so quick at times that it felt forced and unnatural. I couldn’t connect with the main character because of this.

The film is definitely funny, but the comedy felt flat throughout. Having said that, Schumer and Hawn’s performances are great. Their comedic timing and delivery is exceptional throughout the film, and the unpredictable nature of the narrative was hilarious in some moments. I enjoyed the originality and creative premise of the film. This is what disappointed me as I think the film could have been amazing if the script was wittier and it flowed with greater ease.

Although ‘Snatched’ isn’t the most hilarious movie I have seen, it definitely isn’t bad. It kept my attention and I enjoyed my experience watching it. For anyone wishing to see something light hearted and have a laugh or too, I would definitely check this film out.
