Grinspoon Easy Detention Tour at Hindley Street Music Hall Review

By Tony Polese · On December 16, 2023

9/10

Grinspoon rocked a packed out Hindley Street Music Hall on their Easy Detention Tour, including hits from the 1999 album Easy and the 2002 album New Detention and others.

2022 marked 20 years of New Detention. Peaking at #2 on the ARIA charts, nominated for 5 ARIA Awards, the album cemented the band’s status as local rock icons. To celebrate, New Detention will be available on the vinyl for the first time, as well as a special edition of Easy.

The show is part of Grinspoon’s Easy Detention Tour and for this show they were supported by Oscar The Wild and Private Function. While the show was sold out – don’t worry, Grinspoon is back for an all ages show on 23 December 2023 at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre.

While the show was rescheduled from a November date, this didn’t deter the enthusiastic punters, and further built the anticipation.

Adelaide band Oscar The Wild started the night with their punk pop indie rock with melodic harmonies. Check out their new EP She’ll be right.

Private Function brought the classic punk rock from Melbourne. With their stage antics they got the crowd going with Passion Pop and a rendition of ABBA’s SOS.

Grinspoon’s performance was nothing short of rock and rock revival. Taking the stage with powerful energy, the band immediately ignited the crowd’s enthusiasm, setting the tone for the rest of the night.

From the moment they launched into Anyday Anyhow, it was on. Hit after hit, both Easy and New Detention are iconic albums defining the spirit of ‘90s and early 2000s rock.

Lost Control, American Party Bomb, and Rockshow followed, before hitting the crowd with classic Ready 1.

Ending the set with Hard Act To Follow, DCX3, Just Ace, the audience really lost it for Champion and More Than You Are.

Frontman Phil’s charismatic presence was undeniable, his vocals powerful and filling the venue. It was his unplugged rendition of INXS’s Don’t Change that was a highlight of the show. Phill stood in as part of the audience lit up with a spotlight and wielding an acoustic guitar showcased his unwavering vocal presence.

The band delivered hit after hit, showcasing the timelessness of the tracks. Pat, Joe, and Chris were just as powerful as ever, solidly delivering the riff based tunes with their rock mastery.

What a perfect venue for the show, the tiered audience gave a full view of the rock pit on the packed out floor and layers of punters adorned the balconies, which the band used to their full advantage – involving sections of the audience in a sing along to which of course the whole venue obliged. The lighting was great and captured perfect moments of the band’s silhouette and the minimalistic gusto of their stage presence.

Grinspoon’s enduring musical prowess was in full swing. Their high energy rock and roll resonated as modern day anthems, solidifying them as rock history icons, reminiscent of the legendary ACDC.

Grinspoon is back for an all ages show on 23 December 2023 at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre as part of the Easy Detention Tour. Tickets available at Ticketek.
