The Jezabels Review

By Tony Polese · On November 21, 2016

Words by Karen Farrgua

Indie rock band The Jezabels have been entertaining fans since 2007, and we were lucky enough to have them back in Adelaide again after four years.

Band members appeared one by one on the smoky set, lead singer Hayley Mary coming out last with wine in hand, dressed in a leather jacket and pants. Heather Shannon looked focused on keyboard, as well as Samuel Lockwood on guitar, and Nik Kaloper on drums.

The first track out of the gate was ‘Stand and Deliver’, which is exactly what they did. They also played others from latest album Synthia, such as ‘My Love Is My Disease’, ‘Smile’, ‘Unnatural’ and ‘Pleasure Drive’.

Hayley’s powerful vocals were put on show as she took you to another place, dancing around on stage, flipping her hair, gyrating with the mic stand. Her energy was great. Samuel was also getting into the beat with some head banging. It sounded like 80’s rock, but a new version of it, and was amazing live.

There was some sing-a-long and applause to some of the older tracks from previous years, and crowd surfing from Hayley as she launched herself into the people, laying on her back, one leg in the air pointing her boot.

There’s no doubt about these guys receiving ARIA awards for their albums. The Jezabels performance was a reflection of their immense talent as a band. Hopefully they will return sooner than later.
