Millie (Ana Scotney) has graduated and earned a scholarship to work for a prestigious architect firm in New York. She is sitting on the plane in Wellington, but as the plane is about to move, she has a panic attack and demands to be let off the plane. Once back in the terminal and has collected her luggage, she has calmed down and tries to rebook her flight – making excuses in the hope that the airline will simply replace her ticket. No such luck!
She finds out that the cheapest flight is around $2,000 in a couple of days – and she doesn’t have any money. Millie calls her friend Carolyn (Jillian Nguyen) to ask for the money for the car she sold to her. After going to a loan company but, not having any assets to support the loan, decides to sneak back to her old apartment to get the car keys. To avoid embarrassing explanations, she decides to lay low and not face her friends or family. At her apartment, she has to crash a party disguised in a rain jacket and motor bike helmet she borrows from outside. She overhears conversations about herself from friends and colleagues.
As she leaves, her old lecturer recognises her as he is about to go to the party! She manages to convince him not to go in, saying the party had become an orgy and ends up driving him home. At least with the car she can now get her loan but still has to avoid the people she knows – this becomes increasingly difficult. To convince everyone that she is in New York she takes selfies of her smiling and laughing and superimposes them onto photos of the city she downloads from the internet.
Everything she does goes perilously close to being discovered and there are a few bombshells thrown into the mix – including a couple from her boyfriend Henry (Chris Alosio)! Not the best NZ movie I have seen, but still quite enjoyable and worth the visit to the cinemas to see how it pans out.
