In the Chair: He loves being taken for a RIDE, he’s Shilo Uberti (INSTYNKT)

By Tony Polese · On September 19, 2022

In the Chair is a regular feature on Eventalaide, highlighting artists from across Australia and occasionally overseas. Everyone gets basically the same questions. It is just meant to be a bit of fun so please treat it as such.

Questions by Geoff Jenke

Starting life as a high school band with guitarist Michael Uberti, Michael’s twin brother Shilo Uberti on bass, Mac Nicholson on drums and an entirely different lead singer, the present-day INSTYNKT lineup evolved by pure coincidence one night when Charlie, who was also playing in other bands at the time, stumbled across the band’s Instagram, lamenting that they already had a lead vocalist. But fortune favours the bold, and INSTYNKT’s eventual fate was sealed that very night via some fortuitously-timed DMs, as Charlie shares, “I don’t really know what drew me to them and was disheartened because they already had a singer but something just told me to reach out. Coincidentally, they were actually in need of a new singer! They invited me to audition – and the rest is history. The name was originally Black Temple before I joined, but we all felt that we needed a refreshed name. Shilo had a full-on dream when he was younger that he was playing to a sold-out crowd at Wembley under the name Animal Instinct. A lightbulb went on in my head and I suggested we simply name it Instinct. After not being completely satisfied, I changed the spelling to INSTYNKT and put it in all caps. It looked good on paper – so we went with it”.

Name: Shilo

Alias: The Sheel/Animal

Band: INSTYNKT

In less than 50 words describe your music, the band and yourself.
Our music is what you would call straight up rock n roll. We try and re capture the roots of what rock n roll should be, and not what is being served up on Australian mainstream radio as “rock n roll”. Myself, full blown animal, aspiring to be a rock n roll star.

What was the first record you bought with your own money and where from?
Miley Cyrus’ “Bangerz” when I was about 11 years old from the iTunes store. Took me 3 weeks to save up for it.

80’s or 90’s Music:
80’s

What music are you currently listening to?
Guns N Roses Chinese Democracy funnily enough.

The Best live artist/band you’ve seen:
If I could see INSTYNKT it would be us, but it would have to be AC/DC.

Your “In the mood for love” song:
Gooey by Glass Animals

Your favourite Saturday night party record:
Saturday Nights (alright for fighting) due to “past events”

Your favourite Sunday morning chill out record:
XXXTentacion, Jocelyn Flores

Which song do you wish you had written:
Tribute, Tenacious D

Roger Daltry once said “Rock N Roll has no future”. Do you agree with him:
What an idiot, clearly hasn’t seen an INSTYNKT show. We are the future of Rock N Roll.

Vinyl, CD or Streaming?
Streaming, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

If you could record or play live with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
Motley Crue at their peak. I believe I’d outdo them.

What is the most useless talent you have?
I’m a god at fortnite

Your finest recorded moment?
Schoolies. Went 7 days of smashing a slab and a bit per day. Beat that, Tommy Lee.

Who is your musical hero and what one question would you ask them?
Johnny Depp, and do you really wear Dior?

Dying, peacefully on your death bed, what song would you like to hear?
I’m all alone, the song that donkey sings in Shrek.

Nothing But Thieves self-titled

Guns N Roses – Appetite for Destruction
Kanye West – Graduation

Favourite all time movie:

Put Low Rider by War on repeat

Best show you have ever played in your career:
When we played Frankies in Sydney. That was hectic.

Any backstage incident that makes you laugh?
Not quite backstage but there was one time when our mate was driving us to a gig and Charlie had too much to drink and spewed guarana smirnoff can EVERYWHERE

Neil Young or Paul McCartney?
Paul McCartney, is that even a question?

Who is the nicest person in Rock n Roll at the moment?
Has to be Dave Grohl.

What do you hope the next 12 months holds for you?
I hope for an international tour, it’s at early stages of planning but the dream is becoming more of a reality the more we progress.

Classic rock gets a mighty modern makeover via the punchy new track RIDE from Melbourne youngsters INSTYNKT. An upbeat anthem for positive self-belief set against rock and roll served straight up, RIDE also comes belting in today with an accompanying music video, marking the band’s first ever official music video released into the wild.

RIDE radiates pub rock swagger with fresh overtones, packed full of stomping beats, passionate riffs and pure pout via lead vocalist Charlie Lane. An uplifting and elementary rock and roll gem, complete with its singalong chorus and euphoric key change closing the track out in style, RIDE brings together INSTYNKT’s various eclectic personal influences. Weaving nods to the likes of Oasis, The Doors, INXS, Guns N Roses, Toto, Foo Fighters and KISS, RIDE also ultimately fuses the band’s own burgeoning sonic DNA into the mix alongside more classic inspiration, with the track serving both as a celebration of passion and a resounding declaration.

Vocalist Charlie elaborates, “Ride is just a song saying “here we come, if you haven’t heard about us yet, you will”. It’s very self-inspired and is about believing in and backing yourself with no apologies, which is how it should be if you are passionate about your cause. With that being said, staying humble is important, but you can be both humble and believe in yourself simultaneously”.
