Cheersquad Records and Tapes are very happy to present L.A. Mood’s debut album A Print Out of the Sun. The album is released on black vinyl, limited edition orange vinyl and digitally.
L.A. Mood is the solo project of Melbourne based multi-instrumentalist and producer Dave Mudie. He’s the full-time drummer for Courtney Barnett, and has played in upwards of 40 other bands and counting – for him, touring down-time means burying himself in studio projects and playing local gigs
Most recently Mudie played drums on Jess Ribeiro’s latest album, recorded Jade Imagine’s debut and played on releases from Gumboot, Super American Eagle (alongside Brent DeBoer of The Dandy Warhols), Cannon, Baby Blue & Evan Dando (The Lemonheads).
Mudie grew up in a musical family; both parents were professional musicians – his dad Don Mudie was a key member of seminal ‘60s & ‘70s bands in The Groop and Axiom and co-writer with Brian Cadd, and his mum a singer. Music has always been an obsession in Mudie’s life.
The new single from A Print Out of the Sun, “Floaty”, features Don Mudie on banjo and Kat Mear from Cash Savage and the Last Drinks on fiddle.
L.A. Mood’s new music follows the release of a 7” single and two EPs. In 2017, after years of touring the seminal album Sometimes I Sit and Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit with Courtney Barnett, Mudie finally turned his attention to his own music. His first release was a split single for Milk! Record’s Spit Singles Club series – L.A. Mood’s track “Virgin Song” featured Courtney Barnett on slide guitar.
At the same time L.A. Mood signed with Hotel Motel Records before ever playing a gig. Debut EP Crushing Highs & Amazing Lows was recorded at Revolver Studios in Portland, Oregon with producer Collin Hegna of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It showcased a range of styles – slacker rock, indie-pop and alt-country; and influences – T. Rex, Dandy Warhols, Ty Segall etc. It included further collaborations with Courtney Barnett and Bob Harrow (Immigrant Union), and artwork by Celeste Potter.
2019’s EP Breakfast at Sassy’s drew from the swinging 60’s, psychedelic 70’s and indie-pop of the 00’s, and was again recorded in Portland with Hegna. It featured collaborations with Ambrose Kenny Smith (King Gizz), Bones Sloane (fellow CB band), Jess Ribeiro and Bob Harrow, and cover arts by Austin, TX artist Mary Streepy. The Breakfast At Sassy’s EP tour was the first time L.A. Mood played live with a full band, and saw them sell out shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
L.A. Mood’s debut album A Print Out of The Sun was written and recorded across Melbourne, Portland and Castlemaine, and again mixed by Hegna. The title is inspired by a longing for the sun in places where it can seem hard to find. It’s an opportunity to take lightness with you wherever you go. The artwork is again by Mary Streepy. And there’s plenty of lightness on the album – ’60s harmonies, bright guitars and psychedelia… But there’s also plenty of grit, distortion and thumping drums.
A Print Out of The Sun is a welcome statement from one of Australia’s most experienced musicians, both on stage and in the studio. Effortless production meets confident songwriting. With a national tour planned upon release – with a live band featuring other luminaries Bones Sloane (Courtney Barnett), James Fleming (Davey Lane, Gumboot), Thommy Toranto (White Vans) – 2022 will see The Mood very bright indeed.
