The Australian International 3 Day Event, Show Jumping Day, Adelaide

By Kathryn Roberston · On November 11, 2016

AI3DE – One of Australia’s most highly anticipated Equestrian events

Eventalaide was part of the official media coverage for the Australian International 3 Day Event.  I was lucky enough to tag along on Sunday with some of my colleagues, where the final comps were taking place within the lovely and picturesque Victoria Park. Sunday’s program included the show jumping stage, so I was pretty excited to check it out.

I have to admit, I would never usually attend a horse event like this; after all, I think I’ve only been to the races once before.  But I was pleasantly surprised; I had a fantastic day.  It certainly helped that the weather was a perfect 27 degrees.

On arrival I noticed how chilled everyone was; attendees quietly ate and drank all while watching the day’s events unfold; it wasn’t rowdy and manic like a football match, more like families picnicking in the park. There was a great mixture of young and old; corporate types and of course families. It really was a lovely atmosphere.

My colleagues and I scored ourselves the perfect viewing spot, so decided to take turns wandering the grounds and soaking up the atmosphere. This was also a great opportunity to take some photos and mingle with fellow media outlets and punters alike.

By the final jump of the day, the tension for the competitors had really ramped up; everyone was keen to see if crowd favourite Hazel Shannon could hold onto her lead which was now under threat from Clifford of New South Wales, who on the previous day, had jumped into first place after a thrilling cross country section. The vibe was electric as the crowd eagerly watched to see who would win!

I’m no expert, but I could tell from the crowds reaction; Hazel Shannon’s near faultless run was going to be enough. Taking out first place for the Cross Country; Adelaide CCI. This was thrilling to watch and something I won’t forget!

During the official after race media interviews, a common response from all the rider’s, was that of high praise for the event organisers. Noting how smoothly everything had run. Something I would have to agree on. This was another world class event by the South Australian Government, and I can’t wait to head back again next year.
