In the Chair – She Hates Goodbyes, she’s Hope D.

By Tony Polese · On April 29, 2022

In the Chair is a regular feature on Eventalaide, highlighting artists from across Australia and occasionally overseas. Everyone gets the same questions. It is just meant to be a bit of fun so please treat it as such.

Questions by Geoff Jenke

Introducing herself in late 2019 with her debut single ‘Swim’, Hope D captivated audiences with her eclectic capability to create purposeful, confessional and captivating music. This release led her to taking home the inaugural Queensland Music Awards Emerging Artist Of The Year, performances at BIGSOUND2019, Splendour In The Grass, LanewayFestival and King Street Crawl, as well as sold-out headline shows in her hometown Brisbane.

The beginning of 2020 saw her release an aptly titled second single named‘Second’ and then follow up tracks ‘Common Denominator’ and ‘Miscommunicate’, once again wowing and surprising fans by her change in sound, but maintaining the same inviting charm and razor-sharp wit through her authentically honest, raw and relatable songs. Hope ended 2020 by winning the prestigious Carol Lloyd Award, an initiative aimed to address the gender imbalance in music and support an emerging female-identifying or non-binary singer-songwriter.

Second – Official Music Video – Hope D

Name: Hope Defteros

Alias: Hope D

In less than 50 words describe your music and yourself.
My music reflects my darkest and lightest thoughts and is shared with the hopes to find people that think similarly to me out there. I also release it to help people know they’re not alone in specific feelings and to comfort them with music that soothes their feelings. Personally, I love beer, sh*t talking and I wouldn’t know where I would be without music.

_________________________________________________________________________________

What was the first record you bought with your own money and where from?
Hozier’s album ‘Hozier’. Downloaded it from iTunes and used all my data but it was beyond worth it.

60’s or 70’s Music:
70’s

What music are currently listening to?
Remi wolf, Spacey Jane, Claire Rosinkranz, Ruel, The Dandy’s

The Best live artist/band you’ve seen:
Hozier. For sure. Or the Dandy’s, a local Meanjin band who I am obsessed with currently.

Your “In the mood for love” song:
Billie Bossa Nova – Billie Eilish

Your favourite Saturday night party record?
Target Practise by Carols Daughter, SUCH a pump urrrp

Your favourite Sunday morning chill out record?
Fire On Mars EP by BENEE

Which song do you wish you had written?
Toxic by Brittany Spears, Sitting Up by spacey Jane, Growing Up Is by Ruel

Roger Daltry once said “Rock N Roll has no future”. Do you agree with him?
Hell no. It is the future. I feel like it’s coming back now more than ever and it gives people a chance to release emotions similar to the heavier sounds of the style.

Vinyl, CD or Streaming?
I stream personally but prefer Vinyl. I am collecting Vinyl’s atm for when I move out with a friend who has a Vinyl Player.

If you could record or play live with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
Remi. Wolf.

What is the most useless talent you have?
I can spit a really tall stream of water from my mouth like a fountain.

Your finest recorded moment?
Doing a flip into the ocean but back flopping so hard, my back was blood red.

If you could open a show for any artist/band, who would it be?
Ed Sheeran would be insane, would be the biggest 360 for me because he inspired me when I was first writing music and I adopted his looping and writing style.

Stuck on a desert island for a year and can only take three albums. What would they be?
Hoziers ‘Hozier’, Channel Orange by Frank Ocean and Panacea by Sahara Beck

Favourite all time movie:
Bridesmaids. Or Burlesque. Or Perks of being a Wallflower. I literally forget every movie I’ve ever seen when I get asked this question

Who would you rather be for a day, Mariah Carey or Taylor Swift?
This is not okay to ask. I think Mariah Carey though but I don’t really have any reasoning.

Best show you have ever played in your career:
Our shows get better and more fun every year but it would have to be Laneway 2020, was our first (and only) festival and I only had one song out at the time but still so many people came. Was so wholesome

Paul McCartney or Neil Young?
Paul McCartney

Who is the nicest person in Rock n Roll at the moment?
Snail Mail. ROCK .

What do you hope the next 12 months holds for you?
FESTIVALS: I just want to play festivals with my band so bad. One thing happens after another and our hopes have been knocked down constantly but I’m excited for when we get to play more! And perhaps to be able to live off what I do, that would be wild!

Hate Goodbyes – Hope D (Acoustic Version)

Hope D’s latest single is Hate Goodbyes. “I wrote ‘Hate Goodbyes’ in 2018 about a relationship that was constantly ending and starting again. It was difficult to come to the realisation that we shouldn’t be together and just call it off completely, but the thought of that final goodbye was so unbearable that we continuously kept the relationship going after it would end. I would come to terms with the reality that we were only together because it was painful not to be, which caused spirals, emotional shut offs, and yet again another breakup.” Hope D explains of the track.

The signature pop-rock sound she has previously honed shines super bright on this track with its infectiously penned hook immediately infiltrating your ears.
