It is unfortunate that even with high profile exposure to larger audiences at the Clipsal 500, Womadelaide, appearances at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in recent years and the use of one of his songs (Oh Darlin’) in an internationally award-winning television commercial used to promote the Adelaide Hills (The Land of the Long Lunch), Max Savage has not yet gained the level of attention he duly deserves. There are dedicated fans and a strong audience in certain quarters as demonstrated by the eager line-up before doors opened when the False Idols last played the Wheatsheaf Hotel and returning to the live stage post pandemic lockdowns, he certainly has been successful with sold out shows including at the Woodville Town Hall for the final Foyer Fridays session in early November.

Max has reconvened his most recent musical incarnation The Lofty Mountain Band for a welcome return to the Crown and Anchor during a January residency entitled the Monday Night Ramble + Folk-A-Thon which continues for two more shows.

The all-acoustic bluegrass set remains true to Max’s style and serves as a primer for the uninitiated. The line up this Monday just gone included long time collaborators Steve Pedersen on mandolin and Tom Kneebone on guitar along with regular Dylan Kuershner on double bass and fiddler Tom Boehm.

While they may be treating this residency as a live rehearsal for upcoming recording sessions, these gigs are as well performed as any Max Savage show you will see.

Alongside the run of this residency the band play an additional show on the afternoon of January 23rd, thesuitably named Hills Folk-A-Thon with the Lofty Mountain Band in Macclesfield at the Three Brothers Arms for those who may not be able to make it into the CBD on a Monday evening although unlike the complimentary residency there is a charge and booking ahead is advised.

For further listening try the Family Bushdance live music podcast which is wholly recommended.
