Review: The Whitlams at the Gov

By Tony Polese · On September 26, 2016

Words by Karen Farrugia

Indie rock band The Whitlams are a well-known crowd favourite amongst Australian audiences. Since forming in 1992 in Sydney, four of their albums have reached the ARIA top charts, demonstrating the group’s immense talent in their field.

The band needed no introduction as they walked out and broke into their first song “Blow up the Pokies”, which was a strong start to the night. They also played “Love This City”, “Been Away Too Long”, as well as their biggest hits “No Aphrodisiac”, “Thank You”, and a version of “I Make Hamburgers”.

Each performance displayed Tim Freedman’s song writing genius, as well as the skills of Jak Housden on guitar, Warwick Hornby on bass guitar, and Terepai Richmond on drums.

Sing-a-longs were encouraged, with the response from the crowd being so lively that Freedman allowed them to take over.

The final song for the evening was “I Will Not Go Quietly”, which was a perfect end to the show.

There is no doubt despite some misfortunes in the past, The Whitlams can still pull off a great gig and wow audiences for years to come.
