Fringe Review: Nath Valvo

By Tony Polese · On March 10, 2020

Nath Valvo – Chatty Cathy
Studio 7, The Garden of Unearthly Delights

This is my third year in the annual installment of ‘What’s Happening in Nathan Valvo’s Life?’.

First was the pressure that marriage equality placed on him by family and friends in the wake of the ‘YES’ vote. Next, was the pretty horrifying discussion of how his friends thought it would be great if he helped them to have children so ‘his sperm were not going to waste’. Both shows were utterly hilarious: What does 2020 Fringe hold for Valvo? Is he still agonizing over his life is progressing? Or, has he been upping his yoga and meditation and he feeling calmer and more centred? Not bloody likely.

Seems to be that the Valvo mid-life crisis is in full swing. His friends have had kids. They’ve replaced festivals with wine and cheese and Air B&Bs and Nath LOATHES Air B&B’s. They involve hosts that want to chat and he doesn’t like random human interaction. His 10/10 partner Cody (up from last year’s score of 9.5 – nice work Cody!) has not yet proposed, and he needs to because in Valvo’s world, the hottest partner needs to do the asking. What does it mean that he hasn’t asked yet? His mind is so busy overthinking anything and everything that it’s given him shingles. Sounds to me like Valvo could really use a margarita and a massage. Really.

I thought that there’s be no beating the cracking pace of the last two seasons, but Valvo is like a snowball rolling down a hill, collecting momentum and neuroses on the way. His crowd interaction just jabs in the right places to deliver responses from the punters that just effortlessly add colour and bite to his material.  If you’ve been looking through the guide and struggling to decide whether it’s worth risking the $ on someone who you may not have seen on TV on a weekly basis, Valvo will make your night.

Astoundingly funny. Take your respirator.
